Optimising critical machine components: from design to production

19 May 2025

Machines and installations consist of countless components that together enable complex operation. Some of these components are critical: their wear or failure directly affects the machine’s performance and efficiency. Improving these critical parts can deliver significant benefits, such as a longer service life, less maintenance, and lower operating costs. But how do you tackle that? In this blog, we’ll tell you more about it.

We can already give you a little sneak peek: the key to effective optimization doesn’t start with production, but with an in-depth analysis of the application. By understanding what causes wear, targeted improvements can be implemented.

Analysis

This analysis is crucial for us at Spikker Specials to ultimately optimize the performance of the components and, with that, the machine or installation. During this analysis, we investigate what affects and limits the service life of these components. We look at what causes the wear. We often do this on site, at the machine. Because that’s where it happens, of course.

Compatibility

We get to work with the results from the analysis. Using the current components as a basis, the design is revised with all specifications and improved where necessary. Compatibility is a prerequisite here. The components improved by us must remain interchangeable with OEM components without any issues.

After the analysis, we take it one step further. The geometry and tolerances are determined. And we provide advice on the right material, such as carbide, PM steel, ceramic, titanium, or plastic, and combinations of materials.

Specifications recorded

All of this comes together in a new design, which we then send to our customers for approval. Is everything to your satisfaction? Then we get back to work for you. The specifications are recorded in a drawing in our ERP system. Handy for any repeat orders.

Because we have in-house production and inspection, we leave nothing to chance and guarantee our quality and continuity. This is how we ensure our customers get the very best materials.

Overhauls under the microscope

As you can read, all these steps ensure improved performance of your machine. And that doesn’t always have to mean that brand-new components need to be made. Overhauls are also an option. In that case, we look at the existing components and investigate whether improvements can be applied. Think of using more wear-resistant materials where wear of the current material causes problems.

The benefits for you

Ultimately, we do all this with the following as our starting point:

  • Preventing downtime of your production line or machine
  • Less maintenance and consumption of components
  • Significant cost savings
